Online Bookstore Charged With Nazi Tactics – says ABCnews.com

abc news logo

ABCnews.com reporter Susan Donaldson James just wrote about us in a piece titled,  “Online Bookstore Charged With Nazi Tactics”

Abunga.com — a kind of Facebook meets prayer book — touts itself as a “family friendly” Web site that allows its buyers to ban saucy books from their accounts. What’s more, if enough customers block a certain book, the company removes it from the site altogether.

See the whole piece here.

What do you think of what she wrote? There have already been a few comments, check them out and add your own!

PR: Book Ban Prompts Attack

We put out a release yesterday that had some additional information regarding one of the effects of your blocking and our removal of the Golden Compass from our “shelves.”

One of the things you may not have known was that people tried to do what they could to attack and break the site.  Our Chief Technology officer says it best in the press release, “We experienced hundreds of hacker attacks ranging from simply blocking content like Bibles to complex scripts that attempted to block hundreds of books at a time.” (See the full press release for additional details)

We want you to know that regardless of these attempts we will continue to Empower Decency by selling great books and donating 5% back to worthy charities.

Or you can check it out online:

Book site Abunga.com’s policy stirs debate

Golden Compass is gone because of your blocking!

Because of your blocking efforts you’ve Empowered Decency by blocking the controversial book series The Golden Compass. Thanks for making a difference in what we sell, and how you shop.Excerpt from the release. Full press release is here.
“Abunga.com is so dedicated to providing a family-friendly environment to shop for books online, it even lets customers vote on books to ban. That happened recently with the children’s fantasy novel “The Golden Compass.” The book, which was the basis for the movie of same name released in December, received criticism from religious groups for its perceived anti-Catholic and atheistic themes.

“The Golden Compass’” was our most frequently blocked book in December,” says Abunga.com CEO Adam Slack. “We feel compelled to honor the wishes of our community.”

Oh, and there are a few people over at this blog that have seen the release and aren’t very happy that we’ve decided not to sell the book, or that we exist as an alternative. Check it out!
