This past Saturday instead of doing work around the house, I spent the morning running in the annual 2008 Marine Mud Run (all pictures courtesy of the Mud Run site) which was a lot of fun and is a Toys for Tots funraiser here in Knoxville, TN. It’s a 5k race though the woods that includes various obstacles like logs to jump over, or climb under, tunnels to slide through and it takes you into the lake for a bit a couple of times, and of course there is mud. The trail gets muddy and if you miss the mud that way they’ve included a few mud pits to make sure you get nice and dirty.
One of the things that stuck me was the number of families that were running the event together. Of the 1,000 of so registered, to my eye it looked like at least 25% of the group were families. I found this neat to see as I watched countless fathers help and encouraged their kids to conquer the obstacles. It seemed like a great idea, and a fun way to spend a Saturday morning.
It was a lot of fun and I can’t wait to run it next year where hopefully it will be muddier. I’d definitely encourage you to find an event like this near you and do it with the family! (if you need encouragment, check out the additional pictures below to measure the “fun factor”
