PR: Book Ban Prompts Attack

We put out a release yesterday that had some additional information regarding one of the effects of your blocking and our removal of the Golden Compass from our “shelves.”

One of the things you may not have known was that people tried to do what they could to attack and break the site.  Our Chief Technology officer says it best in the press release, “We experienced hundreds of hacker attacks ranging from simply blocking content like Bibles to complex scripts that attempted to block hundreds of books at a time.” (See the full press release for additional details)

We want you to know that regardless of these attempts we will continue to Empower Decency by selling great books and donating 5% back to worthy charities.

Blocking books (even the Bible, even with a script) is not hacking. It’s exactly what your site invites people to do. You’ve asked people to block books they find offensive. That’s all they’re doing.

Your mistake is in the assumption that everyone believes just as you do.
