Delayed Gratification from the Kids

As the nomination period for the Abunga.com Kids’ Choice Book Award comes to a close I am in awe at the variety of books chosen by our young readers.  In looking at the report that shows all the books nominated and read this summer it got me thinking about how we sometimes gently nudge our children towards entertainment that we think they would like instead of what we know they like.

Sometimes this strategy of picking something for my kids that I think they will like often backfires – I read or watch something that I think my kids would like and they look at me like I am crazy.  At other times the outcome provides me with some delayed gratification.  About four years ago I bought my oldest son the book The Door Within by Wayne Thomas Batson.  It sat on his bookshelf for three years before he picked it up to read “because he was “bored”.  He read the book within a day and then came to me asking urgently for the other two in the series: The Rise of the Wyrm Lord and The Final Storm.  Kids are so funny!

IDK my BFF Walt? Plugging into your kids culture

I was able to spend last week in the beautiful state of Pennsylvania for some vacation. Two of my friends from college, Adam and Marta Myers were gracious enough to to host me in their new house! I had a great week and during my trip I went to watch a few of my college teammates play for the championship in their summer lacrosse league.

While there I happened to run into Walt Mueller, who is the father of one of my college teammates.  Walt is also an expert on youth culture (view his books here) and he runs an awesome non-profit called the Center for Parent and Youth Understanding which is “committed to building strong families by serving to bridge the cultural-generational gap between parents and teenagers” (source: CPYU.org).

CPYU

In case you haven’t heard of them, they’ve got a great website where they have all types of articles, research and trends studies, resources and a book list.  They cover all areas of teen and youth culture including books, music, movies, lingo, technology and they don’t miss much.  If you have kids, it’s certainly worth checking out.

If your kids are older, they also do a College Transition Initiative to help parents, educators and students with the difficult transition from high school to college.

Walt also does a 60-second daily radio feature that will help equip adults to better understand and respond to the complex and rapidly changing world of their children and teens, all from a distinctively Christian perspective. Check it out here. (source: CYPU.org)

Walt also blogs a few times a week on current youth culture trends at http://learningmylines.blogspot.com

Be to take a couple minutes out of your day to check them out, you won’t be dissapointed!

Family Immersion Vacation

My family just returned from the biggest adventure we have ever taken as a group.  Out of cell phone range, no texting, no TV – only stars, water, rocks (lots of them) and the quiet disturbed by the simple roar of a million cicadas.  If the location is not obvious, I’ll give you a big hint – it was a Grand time.  The five of us rafted 160 miles of the Colorado River through the heart of the Grand Canyon under the expert care and supervision of Outdoors Unlimited.

Our float was a 7 person raft all of 12 feet long.  In fact, we saw a condor in the distance whose wingspan was bigger than our craft!  Over the course of 8 days, we conquered over 100 rapids ranging from class 2-5 (3-10 in the Canyon numbering system) and were fortunate that our family did not have a “swimmer” except when we wanted to cool off.  For our youngest, an 11-year-old, it was a time of overcoming fear born of waves that were three times his size.  For our oldest, it was a time of humility having to shampoo in waters soiled by the flash floods of the Little Colorado upstream.

As for me, it was a time to watch my family grow closer together through the shared experience.  The first day’s 7.5 mile hike from the Rim deep into the Canyon where the Colorado River cut its path was a challenge for us all as the heat of the day built.  Our college student raced down reaching the end about an hour before the rest of us and then returned to help her sister with her load!  We were glad to see her and thankful for the help and attitude.  Seeing my wife try to sleep in the 90 degree heat and then waking the next day to paddle 25 miles with a smile on her face provided me with a deeper appreciation of her commitment to being one with the family.  She wouldn’t have had the rest of us share the experience without her being there!

And then there was the excitement - rapids that have challenged the best and that roar with the power of a thousand locomotives.  At heart, I am a bit of a tinkerer and I made a little fixture for a hat that could hold a camera, “HatCam” as it became affectionately called.  After thorough testing, we braved Lava Falls with the rig in the raft and you might enjoy the 1 minute condensed version of the ride on YouTube.

I just adored the enthusiasm of my son as he finished the ride without falling out.  I think his mom was greatly relieved as we realized this was the toughest one we would face on the 8-day trip.

Also of note for me on the trip was the beauty of the night sky.  Seeing with the naked-eye man-made satellites course the sky, the Milky-Way stretch across from horizon to horizon and the awesome countless stars that just are not visible in Tennessee were my nighttime highlights.  When the cicadas quieted, the silence was deafening and the scene powerfully peaceful.  It was a special time to consider the awesome wonder of creation and the timeless splendor of nature.

So far from our comfort zone, we deepened our respect for those skilled at navigating these waters and that took such great care of us.  Enjoying the journey with new friends and families from California, Kentucky, Washington state and Canada we realized that shared experience can gel a community very quickly!   That’s part of our plan for Abunga – that the shared experience of making intentional choices for our family will grow a strong and purposeful community.

Book Awards and $20 Gift Certificate for the kids

It is August again and that means its back-to-school time. If your kids are like mine they are just as glad as I am that the school year is here (even if they won’t admit it out loud).

To help promote the benefits of reading this summer Abunga.com announced our first Abunga Kids’ Choice Book Award. Kids can go online now through September 1 and nominate their favorite books read over the summer. The winning book will be announced September 15. Each child who makes a nomination is entered into a drawing to receive a $20 Abunga.com gift certificate. There are different categories based on grade levels and one gift certificate will be awarded per grade level category. For more information view our press release.

My hope is to get the word out to teachers these first couple of weeks of school about the book award nominations and the incentive for students. We have a bookmark that can be downloaded from the web site to be distributed in the classroom. Please feel free to pass this information along to any students or teachers you know.

Speaking of classrooms, I am brainstorming creative ways to create a program on Abunga where teachers could win Abunga gift certificates as well. We need to support our nation’s teachers any way possible and gift certificates to a bookstore with deep discounts on the books they buy for their students would be a great way to do this.

If you have any creative ideas on a program Abunga.com could implement to help teachers stock up on book for their classrooms I would love to hear about it. You can post your comments to the blog or send me an email at customerservice@abunga.com.

Enjoy the breather as the kids head back to school. Make yourself a cup of coffee or tea, curl up on the couch and grab a good book to read. If you are looking for a new book to read I know where you can find a million or so to choose from.

Help! My Blender is stuck on grind

When my husband and I married 18 months ago we were so excited to start our new life with our blended family. Webster lists multiple definitions for the word blend.  My favorite one in relation to my blended family is “to produce a harmonious effect.”  This is what I strive for on a regular basis.  What I achieve on the other hand is something not quite so tranquil.  Many days it feels like our “blender” is stuck on grind which means “to wear down, polish, or sharpen by friction.”

Friction sometimes rules the day. The good news is my husband and I never for one second thought this was going to be easy.  While we sometimes get stuck on grind for awhile we always eventually remember the word in the middle of that definition for grind: polish.  God is polishing each one of us to produce a harmonious effect. We handle the friction one spark at a time.

It is truly a blessing to be in a marriage where we are both committed to finding the right balance to make the blending of our family to produce a harmonious effect instead of a daily grind.

There are so many resources out there to help with blending families.  My husband and I have sought out several. I recently read an article called Enduring Disharmony by Ron L. Deal which I found to be useful.  I also recently came across the Blending a Family web site by Moe & Paige Becnel.   It had some good information.  Of course Abunga.com has many books on the subject of step-families as well.

I would love to hear about your experience and success stories on blending a family plus any resources you have found helpful. You can post your comments to the blog or send us an email at customerservice@abunga.com.

Can you hear the music around you?

This past weekend I watched a great movie with some friends.  I’m not a huge movie watcher, and especially when I’ve never heard of the movie, but even though I was a bit leary I watched it anyway.  I’m glad I did! I was won over by the end and I’ve been recommending watching it to people since then - I enjoyed it that much!

So you’re wondering what this amazing movie is right?  Well it’s August Rush, a movie about an orphaned boy and the music he hears that connects the world and his parents to him.  It’s got a very interesting cast, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Keri Russell, Robin Williams, and Freddie Highmore to name a couple of the actors but it comes together well.

The movie is a bit cheesy so be prepared - but it’s definitely a little sad, and a little heartwarming all in one.  I think my background in music connected me to the movie, but I think it grabs a bit of the musical dreamer in all of us.

I even got the soundtrack earlier this week so I could rock it out in the office - I really “Bari Improv” and “Ritual Dance” both by Kaki King.

What would you say? Randy Pausch said have fun.

The Last Lecture - Randy Pausch

I pulled up my news today (USA Today Article) and I was informed that Randy Pausch, author of The Last Lecture passed away today.  But this post isn’t about the book, it’s about the man who in short time created change among thousands of people.

In the last year Pausch has become very well known for a lecture he gave at Carnegie Mellon University, after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer.  I first heard about the lecture from a Pittsburgh, PA friend and once his book came out I’ve seen people reading it everywhere.

I haven’t read the book myself yet, but it’s created waves as people have watched the lecture or read the book and thought about life’s purpose, and why they are here.

Two of his points are below, as well as a video of him speaking.  Check them out - and take time to think about your life.  I have a lot to learn from a man who motivated, and challenged until his very last day.

  • “Never underestimate the importance of having fun. I’m dying and I’m having fun. And I’m going to keep having fun every day because there’s no other way to play it.”
  • “We can’t change the cards we’re dealt, just how we play the hand. If I’m not as depressed as you think I should be, I’m sorry to disappoint you.”

Need a new read? I’d recommend Life of Pi

Yann Martel's Life of Pi from

I don’t know if I have a favorite book, but I can say that I just read a great one. I found this book at a beach house I stayed at recently.  One of best parts of renting at the beach is getting to read the books in the house! Doing so makes me read stuff that I wouldn’t read otherwise.

Life of Pi is a fantastic story by Yann Martel. It is about a teenage boy who experiences an unfortunate series of events, and ends up in the middle of the ocean on a raft with a 500 pound Bengal tiger!

Most books have happy parts and sad parts. Good books have parts with other emotions like anger and pity. The Life of Pi conjured a wide spectrum of emotions which weren’t broken into sections. It is hilariously happy, pitifully sad, and terribly unjust from beginning to end!

If you’re looking for a good fiction book this summer, I’d highly recommend it!

15 Miles with the RIDE:WELL Tour

WELL Tour Van

RIDE:WELL Tour VanThis past Thursday morning, I was blessed to ride with the RIDE:WELL Tour bike team as they rode out of Knoxville. The RIDE:WELL Tour is a ride from the coast of California to the coast of Delaware to raise money and awareness for the the Blood:Water Mission 1000 wells project.

This past Thursday morning,  I was blessed to ride with the RIDE:WELL Tour bike team as they rode out of Knoxville. The RIDE:WELL Tour is a ride from the coast of California to the coast of Delaware to raise money and awareness for the the Blood:Water Mission 1000 wells project.

I met the team at their host church, and then rode from there into the city of Knoxville and out towards Kingsport, TN.  I unfortunately had to turn around after 2 hours of riding so I could get back into work, but in the short time I spent with the team I tried to spend time with each of the riders and hear their stories of why they were riding.

I was blown away by their passion for the project.  Of the riders I spoke with only one, had really done any serious riding before this trip.  Most of them heard about the tour and their passion to be the hands and feet of Jesus meeting the needs of Africans drove them to be on the tour and put them in a place most of us will never end up - almost 3,000 miles on a bike seat for the summer.

So thanks to the team for letting me share part of your journey, and thanks for your examples of living by faith, so Drew, Margie, Jesse, Brianne Jessica, Jessica (Blocker), Joann, Jen, Matthew, Erin, Criselda, Mindy, Donald, Mike, Gregg, and David you inspire me!

Success for Authors @ Abunga and a sigh of relief for me!

Implementing a new program at work can be stressful.  We launched our new Authors @ Abunga program yesterday with Author Melanie Wells as our first guest author.  Melanie was a real trooper as we worked out the last minute challenges that always come with new programs.

My fellow Abunga team members are also real troopers as they graciously tolerated my constant checking and re-checking of every detail. One of my greatest strengths is that I am detail-oriented and one of my weaknesses is that I can obsess on each detail to the nth degree!

Thanks to Melanie and the Abunga team the chat was a fabulous success if I do say so myself!  It was very cool to ask questions and get a real sense of her personality and who she is as a person.  She is very witty.

I am reading Melanie’s latest book “My Soul to Keep” and boy is it a page-turner! My goal was to have finished the book before the chat but I spent so much time making sure the rest of you could enjoy the chat I did not have time to finish it.  Guess what I’ll be doing this weekend? Well yes, sleeping but I’ll also be finishing the book!

Did you attend the Authors @ Abunga chat? The chat transcript can be found on Melanie’s featured author page.  Tell us what you thought about it by posting comment/suggestions to the blog or emailing us customerservice@abunga.com.

Have a chatty day!
